So, last Sunday, I got a phone call from my stepmom to let me know my dad had had a stroke. At first they were hoping it was a TIA, which leaves no damage -- symptoms resolve in about 24 hours. But it turned out it was an actual stroke, with some permanent damage. He's lucky that it was very mild -- left leg is numb, left arm a bit. But you can' ( Read more... )

How frightening.

"I think I'd rather the second stroke just outright kill him rather than see another person go through that mental deterioration."

I think this is true of us all. *hugs*

I'm relieved to hear your dad's doing pretty well, and that the stroke was as mild as it was. You've been in my thoughts and prayers since I heard, and it's good to get an update. Let me know if I can do anything. I can't imagine news like this about my parents. I can't imagine how scared you were for him...

My mother survived a stroke, and the therapy is top notch nowadays. Especially when they start it right away. Mom didn't get to do that because she contracted pneumonia after surgery, but she still learned to walk again and re-gained full use of her arm.

I hope he does really good for a long while yet!!!

I'm sorry you're having so much to deal with, and I'm glad for you that it was mild and that he was doing a lot of the right things anyway ... more likely that he will heal well now and adjust better to the additional changes your step mom will make. And it's good that she's there and loves him enough to "take him in hand", as it were.

All my love.

Recovery is so much better now than it was even 5 years ago. He should be fine -- and hopefully so will you!

Let me know if there's anything that I can do.
