Doing it again, but this time I'm going to do my top 25 favorite lines from songs ever. (I really couldn't do just 20. This was bad enough, and I didn't do any Radiohead songs--just too damn hard--and I severely limited myself with regards to Bright Eyes, the Microphones, and Death Cab.)
1. Now there's no sun just a cellar / Nowhere a sky just that black black black black / dirt expanding outwards / Just echoes for answers / Not that it matters / It's back or it's forwards / Unhappy lovers with baskets of flowers / Use them as markers / The place where your bed once stood / The time when it still felt good
2. If I was the sun you'd be the world I'd shine on to
3. We're so controversial / We are entirely smooth / We admit to the truth / We are the best at what we do / These are the words you wish you wrote down / This is the way you wish your voice sounds / Handsome and smart/ My tongue's the only muscle in my body that works harder than my heart
4. Yet it still remains / This incessant refrain / That you're just like the rest/ Your restlessness makes you lazy / Keeping busy is just wasting time / And I've wasted what little he gave me
5. He then played every song from 1993 / The crowd applauded as he curtsied bashfully
6. And I guess I'm not sure it was fear that was born as those awful eyes laid their claim on us / I put my hands on the fence said your name and I started to climb / And it must have been sweat but I drank it like wine / it was sweet my mouth was dry / I heard you scream but I made no reply / I can still taste it now if I try
7. Got a statue of my heart inside my chest / Dropped it just to see if it would break / Now I'm picking up the pieces / And I'm saving every one
8. Brother see we are one in the same / And you left with your head filled with flames / And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth / Push the pieces in place / Make your smile sweet to see / Don't you take this away / I'm still wanting my face on your cheek
9. Blankess and darkness like underneath the leaf / Has settled on me here / And scraped away the sound / She said / "You could find a place inside my heart if you would stay / And I need you back here on the ground"
10. Little bird I invite you / Build your nest / Litte bird I've got branches above my head / Sway with me aimlessly / Walk over mountains high / Find winter nights with me / Hang in you hammock high
11. Sitting in the station it's all a blur / of dancehall hips / pretentious quips / a boxer's bob and weave.
12. I want to be with you tonight / With our legs crossed / Our tongues tied / Now which one of you poor souls / Wants to drive me home
13. Girls found honey to drench our hands / Men cut marble to mark our graves / Saying we'll need something to remind us of all the sweetness that has passed though us / The priests dressed children for a choir/ But found no joy in what was sung / The funeral had begun
14. I could not get through September without a battle / I faced death / I went in with my arms swinging / But I heard my own breath /I had to face that I'm still living / I'm still flesh /I hold onto awful feelings / I'm not dead / There's no end / My face is red / My blood flows harshly / My heart beats loudly / My chest still draws breath / I hold in / I'm bouyant
15. You flicker / You amaze me / Your lips illuminate me / I want your eyes to tell me I'm their only flame
16. Thunderous sparks from the dark of the stadiums / The music and medicine you needed for comforting / So make all your fat fleshy fingers to moving / And pluck all your silly strings / And bend all your notes for me / Soft silly music is meaningful magical / The movements were beautiful / All in your ovaries
17. You fill my head and lay it down / My clouded heavy visions sees / Your arms once mine now wrapped around / A different boy / He looks like me
18. And that still-twitching bird was so deceived by a window / so we eulogized fondly / we dug deep and threw its elegant plumage and frantic black eyes in a hole / and then rushed out to kill something new / so we could bury that too
19. I know there's a big world out there like the one that I saw on the screen / In my living room late last night it was almost too bright to see / I know that it's not a party if it happens every night / Pretending there's glamour and candelabra / When you're drinking by candle-light
20. Valentine / I want to feel your hips press up against mine / We push into each other / Love's alive
21. Have you got any magic tricks that would work for me? / I don't suppose there's anything at all in that bag of yours for me? / 'Cause my baby is in the ground / And she's not coming back now
22. I want to call requests through heating vents / and hear them answered with a whispered "No" / Crack the code of muscles slack and tense / Let every second step in boots on snow / complete your name with accents I can't place / that stumble where the syllables combine
23. Dusk dropped her starry gown / I whispered out / "Sweetie are you here with me? / The mirror crashed on the dresser / And she began to scream / "Bloody murderer / Let me rest in peace"
24. Remember the J.A.M.C. / and reading aloud from magazines / I don't know about you but I swear on my name they could smell it on me / I've never been too good with secrets
25. And here I know seduction breeds / from wanton hearts that would seduce / and grows and spreads its vines and leaves / embracing those who might have moved / but now remain to drink the night / from vials black and thick with steam / such intoxicating delights / would leave you drunk inside this dream
Wow...I wonder what it says about me that almost all of these are horribly dark and depressing...
That took me almost 3 hours. Seriously.
