It's ok. Before going on highway you can reset counter and see what's going on with EPA and others counters. :-) And don't forget to check oil once a week. Good luck!
Sounds pretty much what I have for the city cycle (Mazda3/06/1.6l Auto). Letting it run on a highway brought it up to 28-29 MPG (with counter reset once I left the city).
I think that's probably what you'd get with the automatic... especially in stop and go traffic. I drive an 04 manual, so the milage is a little better. I do about half highway, half roads. I average around 32 mpg, but if I drive a whole tank on the highway, I get 40mpg. take your car out for a stretch to see the mialge anyway, its good for the car and your morale!
Sadly, the autos get pretty poor city mileage...even worse than the 5spds. Check your oil, then try taking a highway trip on counter B or something...see if your mileage is still low. I usually get about 26 around town (most of my driving is local), and 30 when I do a tank of highway travels.

If my tires are 5 pounds low, normally not a problem with any other car I've owned, with this car, I lose a couple mpg.
I haven't tried putting the tires a few pounds over as some people do, because that just sounds dangerous to me.
