I was thinking of starting a garden on my porch and realized that I need to get on that soon if I want to start this year

You should probably try your hand at herbs before moving on to vegetables, as most herbs are less care intensive. You should also see how the local wildlife...birds, squirrels, etc....react to the plants so you know if you'll need to fence them in or not.
