I have been thinking for the last month or so about a buddhist koan. A koan is a made-up story meant to teach a lesson or impart wisdom or demonstrate a principle. one of my favorites is about a guy who is being chased by lions and he comes to a cliff, which he dangles off of only to see that there are lions below, too. so lions above, lions below ( Read more... )

What Kara said. And in mulling it over since I read it this morning, I realized that maybe it's harder now--that when she was sick, there were more visible monsters to encounter, and grief is more difficult to embrace because it can be harder to locate. It's not a go-to place for most people. It's dealing with someone missing. There is nowhere to go. Then, when you're going along doing what you do, it comes and gets you. It's hideously unfair.

Grieving is very complex and no matter how much you want to control it, you just can't. Don't get angry with yourself for not coping as well as you think you should be. Sadly you can't rush it, put a band-aid on it, or heal it any faster than it's going to heal.

Be very kind to yourself every day.
