Since Pitchfork's list is down, I can't check what's on it. However, here's a short list, off the top of my head, of some of my favorites from the 70s:
Mink DeVille - Cabretta Lou Reed - Coney Island Baby The Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action Patti Smith - Radio Ethiopia (and Horses, of course) Dave Edmunds - Get It Ry Cooder - Paradise and Lunch Ian Hunter - You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic (esp. the first three songs) The Modern Lovers Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle (before he turned into BRU-U-UCE) The Raspberries - Starting Over (really) New York Dolls - Too Much Too Soon Nick Lowe - Jesus of Cool Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic (before they turned into boring smooth jazz) Richard and Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
and of course, the first three Elvis Costello albums, Marquee Moon, and the first two Big Star albums. Just some suggestions.
Doubt that "Run Through The Jungle" was ever scary. Too many other things around to get scared by. Grace Slick singing, "Either go away or go all the way in" was scary (to me, at the time). Mick Jagger was scary. Malcolm McDowell doing a Jagger imitation in "If...." was scary.
