I've often wondered about the plethora of AUs that exist for Stargate Atlantis. Could this constant re-imaging be because we have some very good actors acting in a tv show that basically is shite?

yeah I've wondered that...season 2 was tripe for the most part, but season 3 has been a stark improvement mostly.

I think TPTB keep getting the show just right then screwing it up (taking out ford, and now taking out another character)

Good question and I'd have to go with yes.

I was recently told that there were many more stories to tell (in Atlantis) and I agree, I just don't think TPTB will tell all the stories we want to hear. But maybe we're looking to change the show, because most of the AU fics are more about characterisation than what they are based in, eg: langford_u isn't so much to do with the specifics of university, nor is fireman_verse truely about the fire service, and you don't have to be a doctor to write for doctor_sga. Perhaps the science of the scifi just doesn't interest us as it did in older scifi shows, and that could be because they try to base it in 'real science' which most of us aren't clued up on.

Rambling so I'll shut up now. :)

Yup! Totally agree! Great actors stuck in a show that does so little for the individual character. I think it's because Stargate is so story-driven that we seek out other ways to really develop character.

That's a reasonable assumption.

My thinking it's because there's this huge reset button after every episode. Nothing ever really affects the characters since it's a plot driven show. You'd be hard pressed to imagine McKay's demeanor changing even though he's had several near death experiences, in the end you can always count on him being snarky and arrogant no matter what has happened to him.

Another example would be Sam Carter, she blended with a Tok'ra (which is supposed to be a profound experience, sharing a thousand lifetimes in an instant, I mean what personality wouldn't change) and sure she was crying at the end of the ep but I'm pretty sure she was back to normal and perfectly adjusted the next ep. From then on being a Tok'ra was only remembered when there was a plot point to be explained (with the exception of that talk she had with Martouf on the dunes).

If something like that doesn't affect the characters then throwing them in a completely new environment and watching/reading about them doesn't seem like a bad idea.

It's cos the (original concept of the) characters and the actors are awesome but they're not doing anything with them :P

So we make things for them to do :)
