“It works,” she whispered, “I can feel it suppressing my power already.” As her eyes connected with his in the reflective surface of the mirror, she saw his own change. Unable to meet that look, her blue oculars fell, her fingers playing over the chain and key.

A series of soft swishes as Richard brushed against the fabric of the bed behind them alerted her to his presence. He was closing the distance between them. Kahlan didn’t turn for fear of seeing disappoint in his gaze. She didn’t like doing things that didn’t please him. But his blind faith in her was dangerous.

“Kahlan,” his hand moving into hers as she put the rada’han’s key upon the vanity turned her towards him. Still, her head dipped, but his fingers lifted her chin. “That power is apart of you. It’s who you are. There’s no need to change that, you’re strong enough.”

Indeed, his blind faith was dangerous, but it was also endearing. And until now, she had never been able to view Richard this closely without feeling that lurch within. Her heart fluttered and her mind filled with impure thoughts. Without the rada’han she could…

“It’s something that shouldn’t be suppressed. It’s a gift, as much as we might view it as a curse at times…” he smiled, and to her dismay, she couldn’t help but follow suit. “The point is, Kahlan, you can’t cut yourself off from your magic. You were meant to have it. All you need to do is learn to control it. And if I know you as well as I think I know you, you’ll conquer even that feat soon enough.”

Honestly, how did he so easily cast aside her doubts? While this was something she was adamant on standing her ground on, there was something else going through her mind in that moment, and his words of encouragement only seemed to provoke those dormant desires.

With her hand still trapped in his, she averted her eyes only to look at their joined hands. Turning hers over in his, she maneuvered her fingers until she had his wrist. Pulling that hand upwards, she placed it upon her breast. She heard his intake of breath, felt his body stiffen as he restrained himself from following up.

“Kah-”

Her lips parted against his as she swallowed her name, letting out a long, course moan as his hand gave the plump flesh it held a squeeze. Fire ignited, heat pooled in the pit of her stomach - “Richard,” she groaned as his tongue brushed against hers but quickly retracted. She gave chase with her own, kissing him soundly for a moment until she felt her legs meet the bed, and just when had they moved?

Wasting no time, the Confessor broke their connection to climb towards the center, reclining back as she reached for her Seeker. He hefted himself over her, hovering as he dipped to nip and kiss along her jaw and neck, his trailing down her torso, resting along the flat of her stomach. She cursed the corset beneath, yearning for the texture of his skin against her own.

The sound of a click resonated without the room.

Instantly, her eyes flew open, and she shoved Richard away.

Breathing heavily, her eyes dark and full of lust for the man kneeling on the bed in front of her, she stared at him wide eyed.

The rada’han on her neck hung open, the chain with the key dangling from Richard’s grasp.

“I don’t-” tears began to well in her eyes. Didn’t he want her?

“This isn’t what I want, Kahlan.” Those words drew the tears from her as she fell back, wanting nothing more than to sink into the bedding, away from him. But then his body covered her own again, and her magic leapt. She pressed her palm against his chest in warning, but his weight did little to help her case. “When we… When I make love you, Kahlan, I’m going to make love to you; all of you.” Relief flooded her, sorrow wrought more tears. As his lips pressed to her head, and he lulled to the side, his arms ensnared her, taking her with him.

“I’m sorry, Richard.”

“Don’t be. I thought about it, too.”

And just like that, she was smiling.
