Few people on this planet appreciate the challenge of eating cake - Sam and Leo are in a very exclusive club.
Happy Mummy's day

Recently, a friend of mine revealed to me that he did not like pie. I asked him, "What kind of pie?" "Any kind of pie." he responded. I told him he was the first person I knew of that did not like pie as a general rule. Now I can say that I've met someone who does not like cake. I don't know why, but I am sort of fascinated by the notion that one can dislike not one type of dessert, but an entire category of dessert.

Typically, one might hear someone say, "I don't like cheescake." or, "I don't like cherry pie." But I never expect someone to discount an entire branch of the dessert family. Not sure why this tickles me so. It's just kind of funny. I imagine some poor little piece of cake begging for a chance to be liked and crying out, "Don't hate me just because I'm cake! Give me a chance!" ;-) Happy Mother's Day!

So if someone said that they didn't like vegetables or salad you wouldn't be surprised? I wonder if there are any soup haters around? Not met any of those either. It would make a wonderful experiment! Funnily enough, my daughter once made me a cheesecake [yuk!] but accidentally left out the sugar. Result = delicious.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised to hear children say they don't want to eat their vegetables. That's almost expected to some degree. I think as people reach adulthood, though, their taste buds have acquired certain tastes for a wider spectrum of foods. Hence, it follows (in my brain) that a wider spectrum would be more inclusive of various categories of food.

Oh, so it's not the cake...it's the SUGAR! But do you like other sweet foods of any kind? You're not a pie hater...are you? :-)

Savoury pies [and flans and tarts] no problem, but those icky sicky sweet ones! The nearest I can get [after years of trying!] is a lemon tart, but it better be really, really tart!
Alternatively, maybe I should try anything cooked from scratch with the sugar left out!
Hope you week goes as swimmingly as mine will be.
Cheers

Here's a question for you totaly unrelated to your post. I was talking to my father recently as he was working on his lawn. (I worked on mine today, so that's what made me think of this) He said he has an "English" lawn because in England they don't concern themselves with abolishing weeds from the grass as is often the "ideal" in the US. I don't know where he came up with this idea, but I was wondering if you could clarify it as myth or fact.

I also have lots of weeds mixed into my grass, but it doesn't bother me at all. I would rather have green weeds than toxic chemicals all over the place.

Hmm. I am a bit out of date [been out here 12 years now] But as I think back to how I felt when we first arrived here......we were all stunned by the perfection [manicured] lawns. It's pretty much a standard joke with expats about the amount of time and attention 'Americans' [sorry] lavish on their lawns - some sort of weird status symbol. Brits are much more 'organic gardening' minded and minimize chemicals. [These are all sweeping generalizations of course]

I don't know about the rest of the States, but here [hot] it just seems so ludicrous to spend all that money on watering a patch of green when you're nearly living in a desert [not a dessert!] [more sweeping generalizations]

So to answer your question, yes, I think your Dad must be right. People try and keep the ratio of weeds to grass on the low side [may 25% weeds] but nothing like out here.

Wonderful. I can now tell my friends I have an English lawn, and darn proud of it! Thanks for your input.

I can just about manage carrot cake [on an exceptionally good day - if it's home made with lots of nuts and sultanas [raisins?]] I get my team to scrape off the frosting!
And yes, Little Miss Sunshine is delightfully offbeat - hit the mark for me.
cheers
