muse_manifesto #13: What makes you laugh?

What makes you laugh?

Julie used to wrinkle her nose when she was put off by something. It would start in her eyes and make its way down her face, and after a few seconds of considering it she would shake her head and wrinkle her nose. Silly things like that are the things I remember fondly.

After the papers were signed I didn’t feel up to doing much. It wasn’t just the fact that my marriage had failed, or that she was gone-it was the third time my marriage had failed. The third time she, whoever she was, had gone. Work seemed like the best choice of distraction, but when you’re so focused on trying not to focus on something that something has a tendency to creep up on you.

I remember sitting at my desk and trying to reorganize Daniel Peterson’s case file, which was a task in itself. One I failed at miserably. So I sat and I stared and then I stared some more, until finally the door opened and the inevitable appeared in all his scruffy glory.

So are you going to cook dinner tonight and watch TV, or should I just assume you’ve become the latest member of Fall Out Boy?

Smiling wasn’t something I was aware of doing at the time, and the look on House’s face when I broke into a laughing fit was one I’ll never forget. He blinked at me before rolling his eyes and walking out of my office, but regardless of his motives or reasoning he’d managed to make everything seem so ridiculously trivial. One might consider that belittling in my position, but then again if you were in my position being belittled by House doesn’t mean much. It’s his way. And it’d made me laugh.

I cooked that night, of course. Tortellini with a white wine primavera, if I recall. House made sure to refer to it as noodles.
