I'm in America. I've been here 3 weeks, and I'll be here for 9 more. The weather in Providence, RI is a lot warmer (and sunnier) than London - so far. I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I wonder when singing the national anthem became the done thing? I'm pretty sure that thirty or forty years ago (and probably a lot more recently than that) it wasn't usual, and all that was expected was that one should stand respectfully.

Fascinating you should say that about the anthem. I don't know anybody who wouldn't sing it in any circumstance. I know I went through a period a few years ago, when I really got into the republican movement and made a point not to sing it. But now I've made my peace with it and don't mind singing it at all. I still believe the monarchy should be abolished. Your comment reminded me of a scene in Attenborough's Gandhi film from his early days in South Africa and the Indians are in this huge hall agitating against the racist measures. A couple of policemen are sat in the front row just about keeping schtum through the proceedings, but not interfering. Then suddenly everybody rises as Gandhi starts singing GSTK and the chaps are properly startled as they realise their duty as loyal subjects and almost ruefully join the rendition in unison with the hundreds of kaffirs assembled in the hall.

That's some change. Well done for the upheaval! I can imagine RI at this time of year is spectacular. I am jealous. Xxx

Some change indeed. Thanks for the kind words! RI will get even more spectacular as fall autumn sets in. My cousin is flying in from California at the end of October to see the changing of the colours, so we're planning to drive up to New Hampshire where apparently it's even more beautiful.
Hold fort in Blighty! Have been reading as much as I could of your entries, even if I haven't replied. x
