I just read this again, and I find it even more interesting with this distance that passage of time has given me . I love your style here-- gritty but not dark because, like Fredric Brown and Dashiell Hammett, you're just the scribe, the reporter, following the characters around taking notes. If the story is dark and dirty -- which of course it is -- it's because the new Doctor finds himself in a dark and dirty place. A mostly human man who has spent 900 years being one of the most powerful creatures in the universe could find himself in a place like this very easily (as you expertly show) ... a dark and dirty section of a city, with a single heart that's forced to beat to a frightening rhythm and a psyche that's been shattered, the pieces lost in an unfamiliar and painful reality.

I said it before, and I'll say it again: this is easily more than DW fanfiction.

You're always too sweet to me, really. Thank you so much for helping me out with this one. I'm proud of it, and your assistance was very constructive. I'd never done anything like this before, and you gave me an idea of how to make it have more depth.

I'd love to someday turn it into more.

You know I'll be excited to read it.

You're welcome, mcinstry, though I wouldn't say I helped as much as told you what I saw you had put into it. It was a real thrill to read this story and an honor to beta it for you.

Well I'm just a boiling cauldron of angst this week so this ticked all of my boxes and then some. I loved it, and your from-the-gut style. More please!

That was gorgeously written. You painted realistic scenery with your words and I felt the emotions of the characters. Really well done. It hurt in the way I think it was supposed to hurt and I appreciated that very much.

Thank you very much. I'm happy that you didn't mind the hurt, that you accepted it. This fic wasn't meant to make anyone feel good, if I'm to be honest. The sequel is very hopeful, though.
