One of the flames surrounding him is the proper one. When you hit it, you do damage to the core. If you hit the wrong one, you get a Fire2 counterattack. Once you do enough damage through this method, it shuffles the flames around and you need to look for the right one again...there's no pattern to it, it's random every time. Wear your Red Vest/Red Mail on any water characters, and put Lucca in your party since she's resistant to the element.
