My First Earthquake

Jul 16, 2010 14:11

So I was up at five AM this morning, playing Puzzle Quest on my iPhone in bed next to a snoozing TDO. And I became aware of a very loud noise, a rumbling that sounded like an enormous tractor trailer crashing into -- itself? disturbingly nearby. Dax and Lyric, previously snoozing, both picked up their heads and Dax growled tentatively. I didn't ( Read more... )

Isn't it something, the rumbling? That's the ground being moved. Kind of amazing. A lot depends on random factors like the epicenter and the composition of the rock between that and wherever you are, but most of the 3-4 point variety that I've experienced have been the sort that you look at things swaying and have time to think "If this doesn't stop soon I'm heading for the.." and then it stops.

Of course here the first thing that you think of is "earthquake": was that an earthquake? Oh, no. It was just the cat jumping on the bed.

It was bloodcurdling! Me and dogs were all looking at each other like, what the HELL are we in danger? Should we be doing something about this? and then it was over. The house didn't even move hardly but man it sounded like Killdozer was coming for me, or a lion the size of an elephant or ... definitely *not* something good.

And it's MARYLAND so "earthquake" was way down on the list of probable causes.

P.S. The thing is, the sound seemed so malevolent. I mean none of the things that it could have been that flashed through my brain were good. Malevolent and hungry.

Yeah I imagine that not knowing what it was made it that much spookier. It's spooky enough that sometimes the ground makes horrible noises, but since it comes from everywhere at once it really is good at least to be able to pin down what it is fairly quickly.

Your monkey brain was probably wondering whose breakfast you were going to be!

I thought of you and TDO when I heard there was a quake in Maryland. MARYLAND? I was a bit astonished. I don't think you get quakes often right? Never heard of it. So, yes, must have been a scary shock ( ... )

I was in southern CA for the Northridge quake. I had a dream about god coming to see me and lifting up a corner of the roof to talk to me. I think it was inspired by a simpsons episode along with the rumbling. I was 9 at the time!
