Audrey carried her bag in hand as she idled through the cafeteria, hoping that a good table would be open and she could sit alone and uninterrupted to enjoy her lunch. She glanced out the window and spotted the long blond hair of her friend first, the cheerio uniform second, and smiled as she made her way to the door. She came to the edge of the table, surveying the food spread across it before she spoke.
"Do you think you have enough for lunch, or do you want half of my sandwich?"
Louise looked up with a cheeky grin. "Depends what you've got on it," she returned and made a big production of selecting one of the Oreos in the middle of the pile before she even touched her hot dog. She was one of those irritating people who could eat anything she liked and not managed to pile the weight on. Really good genes, and a firm belief in not being miserable. If she had to live on lettuce leaves and protein shakes, she would rather dig a hole and throw herself in it.
"What are you up to. Did I hear a rumour you went on a date the other night?" she asked, her eyes shining as she scrutinised her friend.
Audrey laughed at the girl, sliding onto a bench across from her and taking the contents of her lunch out carefully. She raised her eyebrows at Louise as the girl munched eagerly on the Oreo and laughed. "And just so you know I do have real cookies. You know, from an oven. If those are good enough for you," Audrey eyed the girl with hesitation, holding the bag of cookies close to her in mock carefulness before she set it down with the other things.
Audrey slowly pulled out the bottle of water from her bag as the girl hedged for information, and then finally clapped her hand over her forhead, shaking her head as it rested in her palm on the table. She lifted it slowly and braced herself. "I went out with Jackson Fraser to see a movie and then buy notebooks in Walmart," Audrey said plainly, sighing at her friend's flair for the dramatic when it came to boys.
Louise scrunched her nose up and pulled a face. "Oh, it was that good, was it?" she asked with a snort of amusement. Her hand disappeared into the bag of homemade cookies with a smile. "I love you. I would marry you if either of us had a willy," she decided and gave the cookie a worship kiss for emphasis.
"Come on. There are bigger dipshits in this school that Jack. Don't make me name names and waste my prescious time on them. Did you seriously go to Walmart to buy notebooks?" she laughed. "Wow. That's romance."
