Puck came dragging into the house pretty late, without an explanation for where he'd been. Not that he usually gave an explanation when he was missing overnight. He'd spent the night before partying with some of his friends, and he'd been far too drunk to go anywhere afterward.

He was still half out of it as he sneaked in through the back door and tried to tiptoe quietly past the living room to the stairs to head up to his room.

His feet froze on the stairs when a voice he hadn't heard in years called out, "Noah?"

Involuntarily, the boy's feet stepped backward down the stairs and glanced into the living room where Chava was sitting next to none other than Moses Puckerman, his father. "What the hell is going on?" Puck demanded. "Where's Mom?"

Chava looked up, a smile on her face. "Mommy's in her room, Noah... Daddy came home."

"Aren't you gonna say hello to your old man, Noah?" the man asked, an amused grin on his face as he looked his son over. "You're all but grown up!" he added.

"Yeah. You'd know that if you were ever here," the boy shot back, eyes burning with anger.

He stormed off toward his mother's room without another word, and knocked on the door. In her haste, Susannah Puckerman had left the door slightly cracked, and her son's knocking was enough to push it open. The boy stood in the doorway and looked into the room, a sick knot forming in his stomach when he saw his mother, red-faced, crying her eyes out.

She looked up at her son, red rimmed eyes filled with brokenness and said, "What do you want, Noah?"

Puck's mom had never been the greatest parent in the world, but she at least stuck around, and for that, he'd always felt that he owed her some form of allegiance. And seeing her crying like that was too much for him. Angrily, he turned around and ran down the stairs.

Standing in front of the couch, he pointed his finger angrily at his father. "You get the fuck out of my house."

"Noah, watch your mouth in front of your sister!" the man demanded, standing from his spot on the couch.

"You don't get to tell me what to do. You're not my father. You're the asshole who married my mom and knocked her up a couple times and left us all alone. Get out!" By now, he was yelling, and Chava was in tears.

"Noah, I'm not leaving again. I'm back to stay this time," Moses said, his tone softer, like he was speaking to a scared child.

"Yeah, sure you are! Just like the last 5 or 10 times, right, 'Dad'? What happened this time? Your band break up, or you just run out of money and come to 'borrow' some from Mom that you're never gonna pay back? Go!" He pointed angrily at the door, trying like hell to keep being pissed so he wouldn't be sad.

"Noah, stop!" Chava cried out from her place on the couch. "Daddy wants to stay here. He loves us. Look. He bought me this present!" In the girl's arms was a stuffed dog that she was cuddling close to her chest.

Puck's breathing was uneven, his heart was flying, and all he felt was the severe pain burning inside of him. This was fucked up. It was wrong. And he couldn't stand the idea of this guy coming in and making Chava believe that he was a good guy who wanted to be their father.

His younger sister had been too small to really remember much about the last time their dad had "come home to stay," and Puck didn't blame her for believing it. He had, too... The first several times. But now? He couldn't believe it anymore.

"Chava," Puck said, his protective side stepping in as he saw the worry on her face. The last thing he wanted was for his dad to be able to leave and paint it as his fault. Chava would never forgive him. "Go upstairs real quick and take your present to your room."

Her eyes were distrusting, as if she feared that in the minute or two it would take her to get her gift to her room, Noah would send her father away.

"Go ahead, Chava," Moses said. "I'll be here when you get back."

Once she'd disappeared up the stairs, he held out a box to his son. "I brought you something, too, bud..."

Puck glanced at the box, then took a step back. "Fuck you," he said, turning around and running out the door.
