Artie had been completely shaken up by the news that people he knew were involved in a car accident - a car accident caused by drink driving. He'd refused to leave his room for almost anything, worrying his mother, but he wouldn't talk to her about it. Wouldn't talk to anyone.
He was sitting on his bed, and he looked up as Tina entered the room, giving her a tight smile. "Hey," he replied in response. He was terrified, and he knew it was showing - and he hated it. It was a weakness he didn't need.
Tina's nerves were far from soothed when she saw Artie. It used to be when she'd come and visit him like this her worries would melt away. But not so much this time - he looked just as worried as her, if not more so.
After her feet met the floor, she took a few awkward, unsure steps toward his bed. Eventually she sat on the edge of the bed, her body angled towards him. "You too?" She asked, hinting at their mutual worry.
Artie caught her gaze - worry in her brown eyes, her whole demeanour scared. He nodded. "Why? Why does it have to happen to people we know?" He knew his tone was almost petulant but let's be honest, for him it was a reasonable question.
"I...I don't know," she replied honestly, her hands in her lap. "Why's it gotta happen at all?" She asked, her voice quiet as she reached for his hand.
