This was one of the first songs I remember liking when young and asking questions about - the others being Bohemian Rhapsody and The Carpenters - Calling Occupants. I used to ask my dad about the lyrics. I guess I was quite a morbid child. I sensed the sadness in this song as a child and it's stood up as I have gotten older. I think lyrically this is a stunning song.
