1. What was your first fandom? Depends on how you define fandom. The original Star Trek was the first show where I had a fannish level of interest: watching obsessively, reading the tie-in novels, making up stories for the characters which I sometimes wrote down. This was in my early teens, in the early 70s (although I also watched the original broadcasts in the late 60s with my dad.) The first fandom where I actually interacted with other fans (the glorious power of the Internet) was Star Trek: Voyager, starting in 1995.
2. How did you get into writing fanfic/creating fanart? I wrote stories for my favorite shows & characters (and there were many besides the two Star Trek series) starting probably at 13 or 14? They were more or less part of my journaling, which I did compulsively from about age ten onwards. I started writing and sharing stories with others in 1995, as soon as I found the Star Trek groups on Usenet.
3. Is SGA your main squeeze, or are you poly-fandom-ous? I am totally monogamous in my fandoms (serial monogamy) so SGA is my only squeeze right now. I confess, I have periods where I drift out of fandom altogether. I don't own a television anymore; I subscribed to SGA on iTunes after
semielliptical got me hooked.
4. Who's your favorite, John or Rodney (or both)? How come? I love them both, but Rodney is my favorite. I identify with him strongly, in a wish-fulfillment sort of way. Several qualities I admire: his confidence (which I am at least growing into as I get older), his unselfconsciousness, and most of all his willingness to say exactly what he's thinking all the time.
5. What makes John and Rodney such an inspiring couple for you? Again, I would have to say there's a sort of wish-fulfillment aspect to their appeal for me. For two people who have been pretty solitary and emotionally isolated, each in his own way, to be able to break through that with each other and develop a genuine intimacy (even if the expression of that intimacy is often clumsy) -- that makes me happy.
6. Where can people find more of your work (McShep or otherwise)? All my SGA stories are on
my Dreamwidth page. All but the last are on
AO3 (I need to update.)
7. Pick a piece/story of yours that stands out for you. Give us links and tell us why! Well… I don't want to make anyone sad but at the moment my favorite among my SGA stories is a deathfic.
Where the Heart Is. *sob* I've written happy stories, too. Really!
8. Finish this sentence: John and Rodney walk into a bar. Rodney complains about the lack of Canadian beer; the fact that ESPN is showing baseball instead of hockey; the likelihood that every female on the premises will throw herself at Lieutenant Colonel Babe-Magnet; the small bowl of limes on the counter behind the bar for making margaritas; the dim lights, which will cause Rodney to develop a migraine from eye strain; and the bartender, who winked at John. (And no, Rodney does not buy the guy's story that his contact lens was bothering him.) John just smiles, and presses his shoulder closer to Rodney's while they sit side by side watching the (slower than molasses, the infield fly rule is ridiculous, this is your national pastime why, exactly?) baseball game on the big screen.
9. What question do you wish we'd asked? Mostly I wish people would ask me questions. Because I haven't procrastinated enough on writing my story.
