This article is about my hometown, hazleton. I never lived in hazleton, I lived in a town just outside called sugarloaf in the valley. But are they truely criminals??? camusbear June 22 2006, 19:33:29 UTC
Given that the definition of illegal is a factoid of our modern legal system (and isn't mentioned directly in the constitution), is it really beneficial to our society's future to define a generally hardworking, taxpaying class of people as "criminals" or "illegals"?

Are we talking immigration here or homosexual rights? I get confused from time to time what is the scourge of the moment threatening American hegemony?

very good point! if it's not the gays it's the people coming across the border. The real reason this was even brought up....probably to cover some major interaction happening in iraq right now that the gov't doesn't want us paying attention.

I put this on a similar plane to the bird flu, and the latest :
spontaneous mad cow disease

Please, spare me.

Btw, HOW ARE YOU!
=) haven't talked to you in a while, it's nice to have you back!

While this may not apply to you, the vast majority of people who complain about illegal immigrants are xenophobes who secretly harbor anti-immigrant and anti-minority sentiments. Xenophobes tend to conflate and demonize these three groups of people, and it seems pretty naive for someone to argue that the Hazleton ordinance will not be used to persecute United States citizens and legal residents who happen to be Latinos.

I actually posted about this in a later post, saying that the problem is they'll generalize anyone of latino or hispanic descent with illegal immigrants, which will certainly be a problem.
