‘You may have to kill me.’ It was said as gently as possible, but Severus turned ashen.

‘I might have to. I am an old man, and death is not to be feared. But you would become the most trusted of Voldemort’s followers.’
‘I admit the strategic need, but the thought revolts me.’
‘And once again, Severus, you have proved yourself true.’

I think that it played out a bit like this, though I suspect that Severus waited until he was safely behind his chamber doors before cutting loose with the tears.
