Machiavelli's Disgruntled Protégé
The book’s binding was cracked where favored passages had been often visited, leaving tracks behind in the thick leather. Even without looking, his memory supplied the words on the open page: A prince can defend himself with good weapons and good friends; if he has good weapons, he will never lack for good friends.
It had sounded like a good philosophy at the time.
Lip curling disdainfully, he flicked off the ash and soot scattered on his cuff. He did not have the time for this. There were some … old friends … he had to be catching up with.

Snape does seem to be the type that would take Machiavelli to heart, especially as a teenager. Unfortunately, I suspect he forgot that the wizarding world doesn't have Princes - except in name!

*Snerk* Yes, Snape does seem the type. I was going to try to leave it open-ended as to what character POV this was, but I'm afraid it is a bit obvious to whom my first thought was directed. Was it the lip-curling sneer that gave it away or the nod to Machiavelli's The Prince?

Thank you! I was a bit nervous about this prompt, but it was a good one. In fact, I think I still half a half-dozen other respones floating around in my head as to all the ways in which HP characters might be seen to having a bad philosophy.

Exactly what I was going for...more of a "I'll show you the details and you fill in the story" kind of drabble. I love good atmosphere. Love it, love it, love it -- now if only I could write plot as well ;)

Mmm, gorgeous. And I love the fact that if you squint just right it can apply to so many in the series. Snape, Lucius, Voldemort... even a bitter older Harry, perhaps giving some pay-back to the Ministry that turned their back on him.
