Recipient: bethbethbeth Prompt: Severus Snape: "Your joy is your sorrow unmasked." (Kahlil Gibran) Word count: 104 Rating: G
Severus Snape has worn a lot of masks in his life. One of them is in his hands now. He looks at it, the silver face, the incised spirals and whorls, the receding eyes.
He sets it down to examine his face in the mirror. It has gained new lines over the past year, which do him no favors. Yet to see himself through his own eyes, without the burden of seeing himself through others', gives him a moment of peace.
He picks up the mask again.
There is no joy in his world. He will not leave it as he came in: naked, squalling, alive.
Oh, my poor, poor Severus...and what a perfect final line. Thank you so much!
(Weirdly enough, I just came home from seeing HBP for the second time this minute, only to find that you had just posted your response to my prompt. The synchronicity of the universe is a wonderful thing)

It was tragically sad, and yet beautiful too.
