Recipient: faris_eirin Prompt: There's a potion Snape repeatedly failed to brew. He isn't one to give up, though. Word count: uh, 620 (Is made of fail, here. But remembers with relief that the Cat can’t count) Rating: G, but with angst
1975:
“Amortentia doesn’t really create love, of course. It is impossible to manufacture or imitate love, although this potion can cause a powerful infatuation . . . “
Slughorn’s somewhat fruity voice meandered on but an idea had just occurred to him, and Severus flipped open his book to jot it down in a margin.
Regulus nudged him and snickered. "That's one potion I bet you'd like to develop, eh? A lot more useful than Levicorpus if a bloke wanted to get lucky."
Severus gave him a sideways glance and pressed his lips together. He wasn't going to need a love potion. Lily would choose him, all on her own.

Oh, this is an excellent portrait of Severus, so wrapped up in himself that he doesn't think to go and *talk* to his former friend and the object of his affections, even though he defends her to Regulus. And by November? Ouch.

This is really lovely! Heartbreaking - just at his moment of triumph - and it slides so neatly into canon. I love the additions of Regulus and Kreacher as well! Brilliantly done!

Why, thank you. A story can't earn any higher tribute, IMO, than to influence how the reader sees canon.
