I have to make a distinction in Wonka preferences, because my mind slots the Gene Wilder movie and the original book into different categories, and I love them both. However, I'm fannish about the movie, whereas I have no interest in fanfic for the book.
Also, history. Gah. I should have said I'm interested in all history, but I'm a dilettante, so it depends on how it's served up to me. I tend to fall for certain historical figures, certain historians and their writing styles, certain novelists and so on. I can be lured into any period by a writer who appeals to my literary sensibilities.
Much the same here, in terms of being lured. I'll follow good cultural history almost anywhere. Food history, Media history. History of science and technology.
The periods I keep coming back to are the long 19th century and World War I, C14th Europe/Russia, and the age of Augustus Caesar.
And novelists... oh, hell yes! Thanks, Sharon Kay Penman, for the tour of medieval Wales. Thanks, Jane Smiley, for the unforgettable Norse Greenland. Thanks, Pauline Gedge, for the Roman invasion of Britain. Thanks, Guy Gavriel Kay, for sixth-century Byzantium.
