Summary: Jack has to admit what's going on.
Hank was going over NBC's performance in Jack's office.
"The reality shows are doing great. You have a few good new sitcoms. Looks like NBC is turning the corner!"
"We think so too, sir."
"Good work, Jack."
"Thank you, Hank." After a full year, Jack still felt like he was putting up a front when dealing with Hank. It was never as natural to him as it had been with the folks at GE.
"Let's see... Friday night." Hank studied the binder. "TGS hasn't seen much of a bump since Tracy came back."
"I think it'll take some time for audiences to rediscover it."
"I don't know, Jack. I gave it a little more time last year, and to be honest, I don't know what got into me, but now..."
"Please, Hank, as a favor to me..."
"You asked for that favor last time we talked about this. What is it about this show?"
"I'm a believer in scripted television. It's an art form, crafting stories instead of just exploiting crazy people." Jack was just borrowing a canned Lemon speech at this point.
"I like scripted TV too. I just don't like scripted TV that nobody's watching."
"Alright." Jack paused, exhaled, and looked down to gather himself.
He looked up at Hank. It was time to be honest.
"The truth is, Hank, she's all I have."
"Well pardon my French, Jack, but that's nonsense. You've got all these different shows you've created besides TGS..."
At that moment, Liz burst into Jack's office without knocking.
"Oh! Sorry, I didn't realize..."
"It's alright, Lemon, what do you need?"
"No, no, I'll just come back... later." She sheepishly exited and closed the door. It must have been some sort of personal problem.
Hank watched the exchange with interest. He saw all of it: Jack's expression change when Liz entered the room, the warm look between them, the seemingly psychic communication that went on beneath their words. Hank was fairly perceptive about human relationships, and something told him it wasn't sexual or sordid. It was a simultaneously a different and deeper bond than that.
The two of them now alone, Jack seemed a little pensive and troubled. "Where were we?"
"I was just about to renew TGS for another season."
END.
