It's too bad kids (too young to make informed decisions) have to get sick and die because their parents are stupid.

Or, even worse, because OTHER KIDS' PARENTS are stupid, and they've compromised herd immunity. Can't wait for TB and polio and measles to make a comeback. I've definitely gotten much more interested in keeping my own vaccinations up-to-date.

This is a very sore subject for me.

I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that swine flu isn't actually much deadlier than regular old flu if you're not too young, old, or feeble? We all survived that one, didn't we?

Regular flu is a lot nastier than people realize. Most people don't get it in any given year, and chances are you've never had it. I've questionably had it, and it took me down for two weeks.

The problem is that H1N1, being more infectious, is able to take down more people at a single time. That seriously messes things up, not just from social disruption, but also because the fraction that DOES get seriously ill finds their hospitals overwhelmed.
