Another oldie...

For some reason, I've been in a nostalgic mood lately. I've been re-watching a lot of old movies I haven't seen in years. Well actually, I do remember one of my New Years resolutions has been to re-watch some old animated movies from my childhood. Last night, I re-watched "The Secret of NIMH," a movie that I've been deliberately avoiding since I ( Read more... )

That is hands down one of my favorite animated movies. I agree with you on all points too. As a kid is scared me to death but I loved it. Mainly the scares worked because when the good guys triumphed it made it all the more sweeter. I think what I love so much about it was how breath taking the visuals are. The backgrounds are amazing, the animation is beautiful and fluid, and the hole movie seems to have this wonderful mystical glow to it that I still have yet to see replicated. People usually say American Tale is Bluth's masterpiece since it was such a hit. I really think Nimh is.

Yeah, like I said, there are some amazing visuals. Combined with Jerry Goldsmith's musical score, the result is absolutely stunning at times. Also some of the effects ( such as the way the cobwebs moved, or the glowing of the fireflies and Nicodemus's eyes) seemed better than some of the 3D effects I've seen in later movies.

That's also a good point about an American Tail. Both that and Land Before Time kicked Disney's ass at the box office, which is probably why Secret of NIMH flies below most peoples' radars (it was only in its home video release that NIMH really got a following). American Tail is actually also on my list of movies to re-watch. There I don't remember how old I was last time I saw it, but I don't recall it having the same visual depth as NIMH. Guess I'll soon see how well I remember it, though.
