As for the Golden Compass, the only reason I heard about it was because the Catholic School boards in Ontario made news for banning it. I find it juicily ironic that the only reason I will read the book is because a bunch of Catholics tried to censor it.
I have no interest in reading Atlas Shrugged or the Communist Manifesto. What kind of discussions were you having in which the Communist Manifesto was brought up? Do I want to know? Libertarianism and Communism have some appealing aspects, but I find both too extreme to actually succeed in reality.
I might check out the short story you mentioned.
