Chapter 4
The next day, Kasumi walked to school as usual. When she had walked through the gates, she saw Hikaru walk towards her. "Hey," he said. She nodded her head. "Good morning."
He looked around, as if there were people watching him, and then pointed his head towards the side of the school building. "Come with me," he said.
She raised her eyebrows, but followed him anyway. When they were out of the sunlight, he turned to her. "You and Yuya aren't really going out, are you?"
Kasumi leaned against the wall and looked up at the sky. She looked at him and replied, "We are."
Hikaru lifted an eyebrow. "Yesterday, your friend said that you weren't." Kasumi rebutted nonchalantly. "She was lying."
"Why would she do that?"
She shrugged.
"Well, I'll go ask her. And Yuya." he said before leaving.
Shit... Kasumi thought, without showing it on her face. She walked around the building and saw Airi talking to a group of girls. She jogged up to her and tugged at her arm. Airi turned around and smiled. "What is it?"
Kasumi pulled her away from the group. "Sorry," she apologized. "I've got to borrow her for a bit."
"Okay," one of the girls giggled.
After Airi followed Kasumi to the side of the building, still in the sunlight, she looked at her. "What?"
"Yaotome is probably gonna ask you about my relationship with Takaki," Kasumi explained.
"And?"
Yuya was walking around the building and was about to turn a corner when he heard Kasumi's voice. "Tell him that we're going out."
"Why?" Airi questioned. "You don't like him. And yesterday, you rejected him, didn't you?"
"N-not exactly..."
"HUH?" Airi cried out. "You said ye--"
"SHUSH!!" Kasumi covered her friend's mouth with her hand. "Yes, I said I'd go along with it."
"But why? Did he force you to?"
"No, he didn't." Kasumi looked down at the ground, kicking the dirt softly.
"Well, okay," Airi smiled uncertainly. "Since he didn't force you."
Kasumi looked up at her. "Really?"
Airi nodded. "Of course."
Kasumi took at deep breath and smiled as she exhaled. "Great. Now I've got to see if that Takaki is still gonna go up with it."
The bell rang. Kasumi turned around and sighed. "I guess I'll just have to ask him during our break."
Yuya decided that this was the right time to reveal he was there. He turned the corner and walked up behind her. Airi looked to her right, and saw Yuya standing behind her friend. She opened her mouth to say something, but closed it when he put his finger to his mouth. Kasumi looked down at the ground, and then she noticed that her shadow was bigger than usual. She turned around. "Takaki?!"
He jumped back. "Uh..." He cleared his throat. "I-it's time to go to class, baka." He walked away impassively.
Kasumi watched him as he went away. "Huh...?" She made a face.
Airi giggled and started to walk away. "Maybe it'll turn out better than I thought."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When all of them were seated in their seats, the Math teacher walked into the class. Kasumi sat up straight away. "Umm... isn't Minami-sensei supposed to be here?"
The teacher looked at her. "Minami-sensei has called in sick."
Kasumi looked at Airi. Mariko patted her on the arm. "Dumped again," she mouthed. The two friends looked at each other.
Classes passed by like a blur to Kasumi, and when it was time for lunch, she didn't eat. "What's wrong?" Airi asked, concerned for her friend.
Kasumi folded her arms on the table and lay her head down. "I'm tired."
Yuya had been watching her throughout all of their classes. Hikaru and Daiki noticed this. "Do you really like her?" Daiki whispered.
Yuya looked at him. "Who?"
"Kasumi-chan," Hikaru answered.
Yuya looked away from them. "No."
"That's not very persuasive." Daiki muttered.
Yuya looked at him again. "I don't care what you think."
Daiki stood up. "Huh? I never said anything like that."
Yuya looked away nonchalantly. Hikaru stood between the both of them. "Come on, guys."
Soon the whole class was watching with careful eyes. Kasumi stood up and walked over to the tensioned space. "Hey," she said. Daiki looked at her. "Hey, did you like it?"
She nodded. "It was very nice."
Yuya and Hikaru looked at them. Hikaru was the first to speak. "Is there.. is there something going on between the two of you?"
Kasumi laughed. "No, I went to eat at his restaurant."
Yuya seemed somehow relieved. Hikaru sat down in his seat; so did Daiki. Kasumi kneeled down next to Yuya. "Ne," she whispered. He looked down at her. "Don't fight with your friends."
He looked away, ignoring her. Kasumi smiled. She was used to it: him not saying anything. But... she wanted to change that. She wanted him to talk, be more open.
The rest of the classes went on as usual. After dismissal, Kasumi, Airi, Hikaru, Daiki and Yuya were the only ones left in the class. The two girls walked over to the group of boys. "What are you guys doing after school?" Airi asked.
Hikaru leaned back into his chair. "Nothing much."
Daiki yawned. "I'm taking time off work."
Yuya said nothing. Kasumi sighed. "Well," Airi continued. "We were thinking of visting Minami-sensei."
The boys looked at her. "We're going now," Kasumi said. Hikaru stood up. "I guess it could kill some time."
Daiki stood up as well. Yuya followed likewise and was the first to walk out of the classroom. The others went after him. They all walked silently to the faculty room. When they were outside, Kasumi whispered. "We need someone to get her address."
"A teacher's pet?" Daiki suggested.
They all looked at each other, before Kasumi looked at Airi. The other three copied her. Airi looked at everyone. "Why me?"
Hikaru slid the door open and pushed her in. "Don't argue, just do it."
Airi blushed. "O-okay..."
Kasumi chuckled. Hikaru looked at her. "What?"
"I think you've just changed her entire life."
Daiki cracked up. Hikaru looked at the both of them. "Huh?"
Meanwhile, inside the faculty room, Airi was talking to the PE teacher. "Umm... could I please have Minami-sensei's address?"
He nodded. "But why?"
"I... I want to talk to her about my Japanese assignment."
"Oh, okay."
After he gave it to her, she bowed and thanked him. When she returned, the small group of five immediately started to leave. They were out of the school in 3 minutes and in Minami-sensei's street in 5.
"Minami..." They all looked for the name when Hikaru finally pointed to a big house. "There! Over there! Minami!"
They rushed over to it, Yuya more coolly than the others. There was a doorbell and speaker next to the gate, under the plaque that said 'Minami'. Kasumi pressed it.
"Yes?" they heard their teacher say. She sounded like she had a cold.
"Umm... it's your students, Sensei, from 3B." Airi said.
"Huh? All of you?"
"No," Kasumi shook her head. "Only five of us."
"Can we come in?" Hikaru called out.
"Sure."
The gates opened slowly and the group walked in. When they got to the door, Daiki knocked. The door opened, but there was no one behind it. They walked in quietly, Kasumi being pushed out to the front by Airi and Hikaru. They turned to their left, and saw their teacher leaning on the couch, sitting on the floor, surrounded by heaps of scrunched up tissues and cup ramen.
"Uhh..."
Minami-sensei looked up at them. Hikaru went and kneeled next to her. "Are you okay?"
She started to sob. Hikaru moved back, surprised. Kasumi sighed and sat next to their teacher. "Ne, Sensei," she started. "Why don't you tell us what happened?"
She started to wail. Daiki made a face. Hikaru sat down. Airi pursed her lips. Yuya watched her.
With sobs in between, the teacher explained to them what had happened. "I...was...walking...to...my...master...bedroom...and...I...heard...noises..." she pulled a tissue out of the box, and blew her nose. "It...sounded...like...two...people..." she continued. "I...opened...the...door...and...saw...my...fiancée...with..." She then burst into tears.
"Wow..." Kasumi breathed, in disbelief.
"I'm sure they were just going over work things." Hikaru said.
Airi smacked him on the head. "Baka!"
He flinched. "What? I'm just saying--"
"He was a jerk." Yuya finally said. "I'm sure you're not the first woman he's cheated on. He's probably got a chain of lovers."
Kasumi looked up at him. Everyone else did as well. "Well," Hanako sighed. "I guess you're right. He was a stupid asshole. I can't believe I fell for him." She laughed.
Hikaru jumped up. "Now that that's settled, let's go eat!"
Hanako laughed and stood up, leaning on Kasumi for support. "Sure, I don't want to eat cup ramen again."
"Maybe you should try coming to eat real ramen, at my restaurant." Daiki suggested.
"Don't advertise now!" Hikaru scolded.
He, Airi, the teacher and Daiki were the first to leave. Kasumi followed them after a second's thought. Yuya walked a few metres behind her. When they were outside the gate, Yuya called her name "Tanaka."
She halted, turned around and looked at him, as he walked up to her. He stopped, glanced sideways and said, "I'm glad I said your name."
She raised her eyebrows and watched him keep walking. She smiled softly.
I'm glad as well...
