Chapter 5

Ryosuke lay on his bed, hands folded under his head, thinking. It had been a while since he last saw Kasumi, but in that space of two years, never did he once think about her. After seeing her again, thoughts and images of her couldn't escape his mind. What was he feeling?

Then something Kasumi said the other night rang in his mind: "I love you."

He sat up. Was that it? Love... Was that what he was feeling? He shook his head. No... of course not. Kasumi was his friend, for a long time too, so she couldn't be his love interest. Or could she? Ryosuke sighed, slid off his bed and walked over to his desk. He grabbed his jumper that was hanging over his chair and put it on.

He walked out of his room, down the stairs and out the door. He locked it after he was outside, and turned around. A slight breeze flew by and he put his hands into his jumper pockets. He bounded down the steps and walked along the concrete path. He opened the gate, closed it and turned left. Towards Kasumi's house.

He walked quickly down the path but slowed down as he was nearing the Tanaka residence. He stopped, just outside their gate, and looked at the house. He focused his attention on the window to his right, which was Kasumi's room. I wonder if she's home... he thought.

He looked away and kept walking. He turned the corner. He walked until he got to the conbini. He walked inside after the automatic doors opened. He looked around the store and walked down one of the aisles. He looked at all of the things on the shelves. He took out a scrunched up sheet of paper from his jeans pocket. On it was a list of things he needed to buy for his mother.

His father was going to hold a big party for work. Ryosuke didn't know why, though. He guessed they must have caught some big-time criminal. He walked down the aisles, and took out what he thought was good - according to his mother's list - and put them into a plastic basket. While he was waiting in the line to pay for his things, his cellphone rang.

He swapped the basket in his hand to his left, and took out his phone. "Moshi moshi," he said.

"Ryosuke? Is that you?" his mother's voice said.

He nodded and moved up the line. "Hai, it's me."

"What are you doing right now?"

"I'm at the conbini, buying the things you gave me on the list."

"Oh, I see... We'll be home soon, ne?"

"Un," he replied before his mother hanged up. He put his phone back into his pocket, and moved up the line.

When it was his turn, he took out all of the things in the basket and placed the basket onto the floor. The person behind the counter pushed in some buttons and said to him, "That'll be 985 yen please."

Ryosuke nodded and got out the exact amount of change from his wallet. He then picked up his plastic bags and got out of the line. As he was about to leave, he saw Airi walk pass the conbini. Huh, he thought. I've seen that girl before.

He rushed out of the store and tapped her on the shoulder. Airi turned around, cleaning her teeth out with a toothpick.

"Oh, hello." She smiled at him and then examined him closely. "You're... Yamada Ryosuke-kun, ne?" she said throwing the toothpick on the ground.

He nodded. She looked at him. "Do you remember who I am?"

He smiled slightly. "Umm... not really."

She sighed and laughed. "I guess not. We never really hanged out that much. But... I used to see you at Kasumi's house a lot."

His eyes widened. "Kasumi? Tanaka Kasumi?"

She nodded. "I'm Yokoyama Airi." She bowed. "Kasumi's friend."

He opened his mouth and realized something. "Ah! You're that girl who would come to Kasumi's house."

She chuckled. "Wanna come with me?"

He looked at her uncertainly. "Where to?"

She pointed behind her. "The park?"

He shrugged. "Sure."

He followed her down the main road. When they passed his street, he couldn't help but look at Kasumi's house. They kept walking until they got to the end of the road. When they did, they turned right and in a matter of minutes, they were at the park.

He suddenly felt a pang of nostalgia. He and Kasumi used to come to this park often when they were younger.

"Come on, Ryosuke!"

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" he puffed.

The 7 year old Kasumi grinned. "I won again!"

"But, you cheated." The 5 year old Ryosuke said. "You live closer to the park."

"We both started the race in front of my house though," Kasumi retorted before she ran onto the bark, towards the swings.

Ryosuke grinned and followed her. He pushed her out of the way and sat on the swing. "Ha!"

She looked up at him and pouted. "Ryosuke! That's not nice!"

He stuck out his tongue. "That's for winning the race."

Her jaw dropped. "Fine!" She stood up and ran to stand behind him. "I'll push you, ne?"

Ryosuke smiled as he remembered this. Airi was looking at him. "Why are you smiling?" she asked.

"Eh? Oh, nothing."

Airi sat on the bench that overlooked the playground. Ryosuke came and sat next to her. "Umm... Yamada-kun?"

He looked at her. "What?"

"I was just wondering, but... do you like Kasumi?"

Ryosuke looked at her. She avoided his gaze and looked forward. "I'm sorry... I shouldn't have asked such a personal question."

They soon said goodbye, and Ryosuke walked home, the short way. As he was walking, he thought of Airi's question. Do I? he asked himself. He shook his head.

When he arrived at the outside of his house, he looked down the street. He saw someone walking down towards him. It was... no, it couldn't be. He couldn't deny it, it was Kasumi. She kept walking, and then turned to her house, opened the gate and walked up the path to her house. His eyes followed her.

And then he realised it. He did. He did love her. He couldn't help it, but he loved her. There was no use denying it now.
