For the path: cardboard mulch with sand then river rock on top, bigger rocks on the edges to keep it in place.

For height/structure: Echinacea, weeping cypress, corkscrew grasses, hollyhocks or foxgloves, monarda. Allium gigantium or allium schubertii.

I'm also a fan of those evergreens that are pruned into little balls...kind of Seussian looking!

I wish I could input but I'm so not a gardener... struggling with what to do with my own yard too. Ironically I was working on a pathway around a flower bed too out back the last 2 days or so.

For the pathways though some tumbled pavers would be pretty stunning and would go with the old house feel nicely. I love your house in general.

Pathways-Get some dogs, they are fabulous for keeping pathways tidy. Although they sometimes have trouble deciding on exactly where the pathway is...thus they will make a few of them...and not where you may want them.

Garden-Give bag of cash to a landscaper...and tell them to not dig up the cat.

lots of work there! I look forward to the progress shots, but no suggestions... I still just try to maintain what the previous owners put togehter in my yard. :)
