For my chicas

Found this on Precision Nutrition and one or two caused me to jawdrop WTF?! Seems like the message is to wean ourselves away from stores and head to the farmer's markets. And be very VERY careful that you read the contents when you see the word "organic"!

Organic companies are small and environmentally friendly.

Veggies are the answer.

Generally I'd agree w/you with one exception: soy. I don't trust how this product is being used. Girls in particular should be careful given the high levels of estrogen. (http://www.healingcrow.com/soy/soy.html) When one food is deemed "the miracle food" ... be afraid. Be very afraid!

...and I agree with you as well.....look what happened to our food with corn!!

I personally had difficulties with soy because of it being a protein and therefore ran into trouble with digesting it well. My doctor said proteins are the first foods to cause problems with difficulty in digestion.

For me, soy was particularly difficult and one of the reasons I've essentially stopped eating it. Though I confess I do get sucked in every now and then and always ALWAYS pay for it! I find that whey protein isolate ... triple water cold filtered (read: most expensive natch!) ... is pretty easy on my system. And I always have to have carbs to help the digestion process. For me that means lots'n'lots of vegetables. Which kinda gets back to what you said first, huh?! ;)

All food companies are consolidating. This just can't be a Good Thing!

to see it right in your face like that is rather shocking and sad, although i knew some of those companies had "sold out". that list includes some of my old favorites from WAAAAAAAAAAY back. i wish there were a list of still-small "organic" companies (i don't quite trust the word any longer). i know Bob's Red Mill is not employee-owned. they are my new favorite! i'm so tired of corporate america.

i wish i had bookmarked an article i read in my local news lately about "certified" organic farming. how it mostly means that they submit to high fees and increased bureaucracy to be "certified". the small local farms can't really afford that, even though their standards are as high or even higher than those "certified".

yay farmer's markets!

bob, of bob's red mill, just decided to retire and gave the company to his employees.

we do go to the farmer's market. not everything there is organic. but we ask. it costs more. but so does the organic stuff you can get delivered (i'm using peapod because i was panicking in the grocery store).

Thing is ... food costs are insanely inexpensive. While everything else has gone up, chicken for example, has actually gone down. There's a reason for that. Been watching Jamie Oliver's shows?? Some scary shit on there!

organic chicken is still expensive.

i keep hearing about jamie oliver, but i don't know the name of the show or when it's on.

Expensive by comparison to regular chicken but in the giant scheme of things still cheap.

Jamie's current show Food Revolution is on ABC, Friday nights but you can see episodes here: http://abc.go.com/shows/jamie-olivers-food-revolution

He also has specials ... the one I saw about chicken was called "Jamie's Fowl Dinners" (http://www.jamieoliver.com/jamiesfowldinners/)

I am pretty anti-corporate, and so far I have found no down side to my stance!
