She had promised herself that she would not be involved. She swore, ignoring the fact that fate tends not to care about her promises.

(Or the end of the world, for that matter.)

But some unknown force brings them together time and time again with no regard for the possible consequences. She remembers that ridiculous - well, objectively ridiculous - legend about the red string of fate. There had been an obsession with that myth during her high school days, and she simply could not understand the appeal. She almost knows the saying by heart-

(“An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.”)

It’s almost terrifying. What if the destiny of two people and the fate of the world collided?

(But she can’t help but to have a biased view of this.)

She doesn’t think about these matters as often as she once did. What has happened has happened. But there’s that fleeting, fleeting thought, a feeling, an acute pain that bombards her senses when she sees him again.

She quietly takes a seat and does her best not to look up, not to succumb and mourn and wonder. She doesn’t find it awkward or suffocating - (at the same time, she finds very few things awkward or suffocating) - and if he would only look up and see her again, she would be at peace with herself once again.

But nothing compels him to look in her direction.

He’s almost entirely detached from the world surrounding him (and for good reason, she might add). They are truly nothing more than ordinary strangers at this point.

Evening begins to show itself as the sun slowly sets and the warm colors of dusk begin to filter through the trees. She’s tempted to close her eyes - sleep is threatening to overtake her - but something compels her to stay awake.

(This ‘something,’ whatever it is, is making an awful lot of appearances lately.)

So she sits with her hands folded in her lap, hoping - wishing - wanting nothing more than for something to happen. But she has resigned herself to the inevitable; nothing will occur, and they will part ways once again under the guise of being strangers. Nothing will change. They’ll live. This could be their last encounter - and for nothing, nothing, nothing.

And she begins to drift into different thoughts when something changes and he looks up. At her. Almost completely unsurprised-

(if a little uncomfortable, but he’s chronically uncomfortable)

He stares, and she stares back; his gaze is vacant, and she’s guessing that hers is as well.

She sees the ghost of a smile play on his lips and a wave of relief crashes down on her.

She closes her eyes; she can finally be at peace. There will always be a constant, irrevocable (irreparable) sense of polarity, of two people so closely linked together that they cannot help but separate, and she supposes that she can live with that.

The sky turns dark, and when they stand to leave, she feels that noose of red thread loosen ever so slightly.
