They stop for the night mere miles from their destination at her request (with a roll of his eyes, he had complied - as usual). The sky fades from a washed out azure to an inky black that is adorned with the faint light of the stars.

And he still can’t believe how easily enthralled she is by nature when he sees the calm expression on her face as she gazes into the sky above her.

He lies opposite her; he slightly tilts his head to look at her, breathing a sigh of relief when he sees how shoulders aren’t as tense and her features are peaceful.

“The stars get brighter as you go more towards the North. You knew that, right?” she asks him.

“Who doesn’t know that?”

“What are you trying to say?”

“Nothing.”

They stay like that - in silence - for a length of time, and just when it’s beginning to feel somewhat comfortable, he remembers how enthusiastically she once spoke of the North, of her home.

He remembers how blatantly he lied to her.

The memory leaves a sour aftertaste, and he closes his eyes to purge the thoughts from his mind.

He envisions her face, serene and at peace, and his apprehension fades away into the night.
