i love the emotional state of being constant. it's something that you can expect from people. they'll always be the same. of course you'd never choose to have a negative constant... it just wouldn't jive. I love these emotional times, it's when I feel life is just.. and i'm inspired to exist. "you'll exist no matter what you feel" you say, and ( Read more... )

I disagree, Alex. This expression shouldn't change because it's only applied when someone gives a gift to someone else. According to your definition, a person should be judged by their actions, but there are at least two levels to a person's actions: what they do and how others respond. This expression that you dislike is trying to change the latter. When you get a bad present, should you just think to yourself that this person sucks and be done with it? No. That's what this expression is talking about, no matter what the gift is, the person thought about you and acted on it. Thus, it's in complete agreement with your side; it's just a gentle reminder of your philosophy--a person can think anything they want but if they don't express it, it's pointless. This expression takes it a step further and states that it doesn't matter how the person expresses it (unless it causes bleeding of some kind), the fact that they expressed it in some way shows they are a good person ( ... )

I don't see how a response would dictate my actions. (An action is in the past, and the response is in the present. If we knew how people would react to our actions, we'd make millions! among other things..)

you're right, the expression doesn't need to change.. It just had the word "thought" in it, and I was ranting.

I agree about considering people's thoughts before we judge their character, but only to a point; Our thoughts can't be known unless we express them, and we express thoughts/feelings through our actions. It's common knowledge that we don't have mind readers on this planet yet, so all we have to give is our actions. We know that, and they know that.

If we do hurt someone, our motivation for needs to be explained-- But the inspiration behind some actions do not justify them.

I suppose we could start to "wear our brains on our sleeves."
