(i) a certain romance [intermezzo 1] => xiumin/luhan
Xi Luhan often questioned himself of why the hell he was studying in Korean Studies major. His first choice when he applied was Sports major, and the last one was actually his friend, Zhang Yixing’s choice out of jokes. And unfortunately, he got accepted to it while his friend got the Applied Music major. Yixing always tried to cheer him up by saying that he was lucky to be accepted in the same college as him but Luhan never stopped sulking. That was his fault from the first place he got to be so unlucky!
“You can always join the soccer team in our college, dude,” Yixing told him one day. “You don’t need to be a Sports major student to play soccer everyday and get a coach to see your skill to ask you to be part of the national team.”
Luhan didn’t answer because of course Yixing knew he was right, and he didn’t want to see smug face from his friend when he finally admitted it. But the problem was he didn’t expect the language that seemed easy was extremely complicated and confusing. He often wondered how Koreans differentiated ‘stomach’, ‘pear’, and ‘boat’. He still did until now, though.
Even after a year studying in his major there were 2 kinds of things he still hated: home works, and projects. Home works were… hey, who doesn’t hate them? But the projects from his lecturers were often troublesome and took so much time to finish.
Luhan groaned inwardly when the lecturer called his name to the front of the class. He stood up from his seat and dragged his feet to the front desk albeit grudgingly, now practically glared at a rather small box with slightly opened lid.
He decided that he hated Monday. Not that he used to love it, though; he was just an ordinary student who hated that exact day like every normal person would. The main reason, actually, was this Writing class with an annoying old teacher whose smile never ceased; but at the end of the class gave tasks and home works as cruel as step-mothers in those soap operas. Surely he would forget them all since other teachers were nearly as heartless as her when it came to giving tasks and he would only remember them on Sunday evening. He was a damned student for sure.
But now another weird-as-hell task was about to be given. His teacher just told the class that they would have a partner -more likely would act as a tutor- from various universities in Korea so they would be able to ask anything to the said tutor via E-mail.
“Now, Luhan haksaeng*, pick a piece of paper from that box so you can find out who your partner will be,” said Park gyosunim** with that sickening smile. Luhan just wished it was a cute girl that would be his partner. He wouldn’t object if it was a cute boy instead, though.
He drew a paper out of the box, and frowned before he read the name in Chinese characters out loud. “Jin Minshuo?”
“Very well, Luhan,” Park gyosunim wrote that name down on her list. “But in Korean, his name is Kim Minseok.”
*haksaeng: student
**gyosunim: lecturer
(ii) 안녕 [hello/goodbye] => tao/baekhyun
Do you believe in love at the first sight?
Jogging had become Hwang Zitao’s daily routine before dusk since he first came to Korea which was a year ago; he liked doing it to get to know better his neighborhood in that foreign country. It took him changing his jogging route to find something interesting in the park he ran pass by.
Or more likely, someone.
Today was the sixth time he visited that park, and he could find that person like any other day; that person was a young guy -probably around Zitao’s age- who always brought a dog to train and play with. His feature was quite small compared to Zitao’s, but it was his smile that captured the Chinese boy’s attention. The way he threw a Frisbee for the dog to catch, the way he ruffled the dog’s head and the way he took the dog for a walk were something strangely different from other people. And like an angle’s spell, he was magnified and came to the park everyday to see that beautiful guy once again.
Zitao noticed that the stranger brought different dogs everyday; seemed like those weren’t his own dogs. As if to prove his assumption, he witnessed the dog ran away from its caretaker today and pounced onto him.
“Typhoon, come here!” Zitao could hear the stranger’s panic voice from afar grew closer to him while he himself was being licked all over his face by the Siberian Husky. He managed to scoot away from the dog and tried to calm it down.
“Good boy,” said Zitao when it obeyed his command to sit. It seemed well-trained, but just a little bit excited at that time. He looked up and saw the beautiful stranger ran toward him, panting hard.
“I’m so sorry!” the stranger immediately bowed when he just got there. “I should’ve taken care of him better! Sorry for the inconvenience!”
Zitao didn’t immediately answered to the other guy’s apology since he was too mesmerized by his feature up close; height that was short if compared to Zitao’s but still nice for a guy, bow-cut hair with soft bangs covering his sweating forehead, soft eyes, small nose and red plump lips. He quickly snapped out of his daydream state and smiled sincerely, “No problem, I’m fine.”
“But still, I apologize,” he bowed once again, and turned his gaze to the dog. “Didn’t I tell you to behave well before I let you out of your cage?” his tone was stern and his lips were pouting, what a cute scene in front of Zitao’s eyes. “By the way, I think I don’t see you often in this park. Are you new in this neighborhood?”
“No, I live a few blocks away from here,” Zitao shook his head. “I like changing routes to jog.”
“Is that so?” the other guy nodded in understanding, then stretched out his hand. “I’m Byun Baekhyun.”
Zitao took the offered hand, noting how delicate the other guy’s fingers were before shaking hands. “Hwang Zitao.”
(iii) whisper across the sea => jongin/sehun
Oh Sehun always hates the sea and the ocean.
Unlike any young teenager who usually loves the salty water washing over his body and the sunshine bathing his skin and swimming under the wavered warm sea, Sehun prefers to turn down his friends’ offer to go to the beach on every summer vacation and stays at home. He loves the beach though, the breezes are cool and the scenery is beautiful but he doesn’t want any of his friend finds out his fear over the vast amount of salt water in an enormous size lake with unmeasured depth.
That, until he falls in love with Kim Jongin.
If Sehun is often analogized as a snowflake, then Jongin is the sunray. With the sun kissed skin and toned body he always successes making Sehun wonders how much the other guy loves the sea and the ocean.
Sehun loves Jongin. Jongin loves the sea. Then it is not impossible for Sehun to love the sea, as well. And for the first time in the history in his circle of friendship, Sehun accepts his friends’ offer to stay at a beach house and go snorkeling. But of course he will ask Jongin too, and all of them gladly agree.
Jongin has known Sehun only for a shy 3 months and they have been in a relationship for a month, so he is more than excited to know and get together with Sehun’s friends. That amuses Sehun and when the younger guy asks him why he is excited he merely answers, “They are your friends, Sehun-ah, so they will be my friends as well.” And Sehun silently wonders if there will be any guy who is more perfect than Jongin.
They all meet up in Seoul station and when Sehun and Jongin arrive, his friends are already there. There are 10 of them in total; Sehun introduces his boyfriend to them. There is Wu Yifan who is the tallest among all, Park Chanyeol who pulls a smile wider than anyone, Xi Luhan who looks way younger than his real age, Kim Minseok whose face is the cutest (says Jongin, much to Sehun dismay out of jealousy), Byun Baekhyun who has crescent moon eyes, Hwang Zitao who looks intimidating but actually a soft spoken guy, Kim Jongdae who has that friendly expression, Do Kyungsoo who looks adorable, Kim Joonmyun whose skin a bit too pale but pulls out the kindest smile, and lastly Zhang Yixing who turns out knowing Jongin for quite long time after their encounter in a dancing competition. It is good to see that Jongin isn’t awkward to his friends, Sehun thinks, and feeling glad that his friends welcome his boyfriend warmly.
They get into the compartment no.8 and Sehun and Jongin’s seats are located at 2A, the second seat at the back. All of them have a chat and play board games during the trip but because Sehun had to wake up really early in the morning, he feels really sleepy so Jongin offers his shoulder for him to lean onto. Sehun smiles sleepily and snuggles closer onto Jongin, noticing how comfy Jongin’s shoulder is before drifting into slumber.
(iv) lo más importante eres tú => kris/chanyeol
This is a story of a brave dog.
He was adopted when he was still 5 months old by a foreign couple that had just moved to Sidney. Get a Retriever, they are friendly and loyal, so they adopted him from a small pet store. They loved him instantly because of his good attitude, and soon he became the member of the family.
When he was 1 year old, give and take a few months, the small family got a new member. After 9 months and a few days the wife gave birth to a baby boy. As a loyal dog, he grew up together with the boy and became his guardian. The boy himself became attached to him and brought him everywhere he went.
The boy insisted to celebrate his second birthday also with his dog. He has loving parents but also busy ones, so they were finally able to celebrate it 3 weeks later. Unlike average boys in his age, he preferred going out to a simple picnic at the park with only his parents and his dog than having a big party with his friends.
It was a hot and sunny day, so the father went to buy 3 cones of ice cream for all of them. The mother packed all of the lunch boxes back into the picnic basket. She kissed the top of her son’s head and went to the nearby trash bin to throw their garbage. The boy was left with his dog, lying together on the blanket while he was looking at the sky. It was so blue, and the fluffy clouds were swimming slowly and fascinating the curious boy. Suddenly, a small creature flew above his peripheral vision. It was so beautiful, with various colors decorating both of its wings, and the boy tried to catch it with his hand. It flew higher and further from him, so the boy got up to run after the beauty. The dog, as the guardian of the little boy, followed after him. The boy was too delighted to take home the beauty to realize that he was actually heading to the street. He didn’t see a sedan coming to his direction.
The father and the mother were panicking that they couldn’t find their son and their dog, when they heard a sound of ear-deafening car break and something hit the vehicle. They quickly ran to the street, which were filled with people already, and went through them only to find their son on the asphalt.
The little boy was crying, mumbling incoherently and trying to crawl to reach a lifeless form a few meters away from him. His mother quickly scooped him to her embrace and ran together with his father toward their dog.
The Retriever was badly injured, but still breathing slowly. The father lifted him up and took him into the backseat of the car. The mother and the little boy got to the front seat, but the boy insisted to seat beside his dog. They drove off to the nearest vet to save their family member’s life. The boy was still crying while patting his dog’s head softly, his way to tell him to please hold on, it’s going to be alright. The dog snuggled closer to the boy’s lap, enjoying his master’s soft touches before closing his eyes and released his last breath.
“Chan-chan, wakey wakey up…”
