The thing one must understand is that within D.Gray-Man canon, Allen Walker is, in fact, pretending to be a deceased clown.
The circus performer Mana Walker, to be exact- his adoptive father. The man was not strictly sane; and his mental state deteriorated even further after the boy met him at around age seven. But it was Mana who took him away from the circus and gave the boy his name. Only after mistaking the child for his dead dog, Allen, of course.
Mana, despite his faults, was the first person to show him kindness and understanding, and his death three years later was a little more than devastating. Left with white hair and a distinctive scar, Allen was only able to break out of his catatonic state (1) and begin living again by adopting Mana's polite, patient mannerisms (2). By living through Mana's memory.

Before he met Mana, however, the boy (then known only as 'Red'; due to the color of his left arm) was a very different child (3). Red was described by the clown Cosimo as 'frustrated and hot-tempered', and by Cross Marian as being 'impertinent' and having a 'vile mouth'. Basically, a brat. Hardened by the abandonment of his parents and the years of being mistreated, shunned, physically and emotionally abused at the circus he had been sold to- Red was volatile, dark, rude, untrusting... Underneath it all, he was caring and sensitive to a fault, but he made sure it was hard to tell.
meansprout is Red, if he had grown up without the influence of Mana Walker, or Cross Marian.
