SYTYCD: Top 16
Again a bit late...I was crashed out Wednesday night and had an early flight to San Jose on Thursday and didn't get home until v. late (stupid earlier flight being full!) Can't wait to read what the people (especially Kat) say about this...
But now I get a chance to watch the top sixteen perform!
Karla and Jonathan: hiphop by Dave Scott ("By My Side", Jadakiss) Mm, like the costumes. For all that blowup he did not do that hat trick right. And she'd definitely doing better than him at the hiphop. I like the choreo (go Dave Scott), but Jonathan didn't really hit it for me.
Asuka and Vittolio: jazz by Mandy Moore ("Heartbreaker" Pat Benetar) I think the Costume people hate someone here. I...couldn't decide, on this. It seemed so *controlled* for this song. I'm always so shocked when Mary brings an actual real criticism.
Melissa and Ade: rumba by Tony Meredith ("Emotion" Destiny's Child) Well, the choreography obviously focused more on things they could do, but...it did look good. Again, I always hope with ballroom to hear more interesting criticism from Mary than squeering, so that's good. I looove Melissa's dress, too.
Janette and Brandon: hiphop by Dave Scott ("What a World" Common) Loved it! Choreo and dancing. Fun!!
Kayla and Kupono: Viennese Waltz by JeanMarc Generaux ("Sweet Dreams for You" Jewel ) Oh, imagine if she'd been doing this with Max, hmm? I never believe these picks are random, but I didn't understand why they didn't just get rid of him last week, so...are they just trying to set her up with a different partner or something? WTF? Oh, another BAREFOOT waltz. WTF. Hmm. Well, his arms weren't bad, actually. She looked good. Wow, Mary and a shocking lack of screaming this week! (Oh, crap, I typed too soon)
Randi and Evan: contemporary by Mia Michaels ("Koop Island Blues" Koop) Hmm. I felt like in the rehearsal bit, I could see what Mia was going for, and I loved Randi's costume, but...I didn't like the dancing of it onstage. I disagree with Nigel. It didn't work for me, somehow. (Also, I felt like Evan needed a costume like, three sizes smaller). I would love to see someone else dance this. Or maybe them dance it again sometime (...the finale? They always dance numbers again in the finale). I just...wanted her to be a little more...coquetteish and looser somehow, at a couple points? I'm not sure HOW, but...gah.
Caitlin and Jason: Paso Doble by Jean Marc Genereaux (O'Fortuna from Carmina Burana) THIS is Paso Doble music? I think it was a fun dance/story, but I don't know how it was as a paso doble, I have no idea. I suspect they'll get a lot of votes for that melodrama.
Jeanine and Phillip: broadway by Tyce D'Orio ("Moses" from Singing In the Rain) Is jumping the couch like jumping the shark? Hmm. I was about to say it was surprisingly cute (I don't usually like Tasty Oreo) but...then I noticed half of it, Philip was not as into as it seemed like he should've been. The tearing up the pillows and stuff. Oh--maybe it was because his pants were ripped? OH! That might explain why a few of his kicks and things seemed less enthusiastic/big than they should've been. HAH! (Ooh, now I want to see Evan do this one...)

Group Dance "I Know You Want Me" by Pitbull: THIS IS AWESOME!!! When was the last time they did a group dance with so much ballroom in it?? And I loved the backlit sexy water splashing? OOOH, it was Dmitri and TabbyNap who did that?? Shocking! And awesome. LOVE.
Solos: C'mon, Asuka, not like you can't throw a few spins in there or something. OK, and Vittolio's POSING at the end of his was just...odd. I liked Karla's as a little more different than contemp girls' usually are, though dunno how good or bad it actually was. Jonathan is just...there wasn't any actual dancing in there, though there's of course the difficulty for ballroom (but Max did it better). Caitlin was lovely. I don't understand what Jason chose to WEAR.
Asuka to go: I guess I'm not surprised, really. I like her, but I wasn't really feeling her. I feel like they've just never been as big a fan of the ballroom people...
SOOOO glad they're keeping Vittolio!!! Jonathan is a big wad of gymnosuckcheese.
