If I order a generic American cake from Stop and Shop for my son's birthday party, does that make me a bad mother?

I'm not sure, but it does put you in line with mothers like me, so decide for yourself if you want to risk it :)

(I've never ordered a specialized cake for my kids; most of the time didn't order anything at all - just went on the day of and bought whatever was available at Star Market or Whole Foods. And I've never baked a cake for my kids).

I happen to love generic supermarket bakery cake, so I say it's fine. :-)

It would make you a bad mother, if you forget to get a cake for your son's birthday.

You are right: Ari certainly won't consider me a bad mother for that: he wants the totally typical American birthday party, with cake and candles and party hats and balloons, and the Happy Birthday song, just like it is supposed to be.
