I don't remember Mount St Helen's erupting as it was before I was born, but I remember learning about it when I was young as it was still a pretty recent event then.
I grew up in a big city in England in the early 90s were the IRA were bombing everywhere. I remember not being allowed to go into the city center a lot because there were so many bombs scares, my parents didn't want to risk taking us all into town. :/ to this day I'm really cautious of unattended bags and random boxes. :p
I've lived in Washington all my life, and although Mt Saint Helens erupted before I was born, it's always been part of my childhood memories. I remember my parents telling me about how everything just went grey, how they thought it was snowing, and how it was like the end of the world. I remember going to see the crater in the mountain when I was 14.
