It was River’s first Christmas out in the black and had she decided that the ship needed to be more like home. On the night of Serenity’s Christmas party, River gave her brother the slip and hid on the gantry above the party. She clutched a bucket which she had filled with some of the ship’s recyclable paper waste, torn into tiny pieces.
Once everyone had arrived, River opened the bottle of water she’d saved and sprinkled it over the paper. She stood up, took a deep breath, and thrust the bucket into the open air. “Merry Christmas!” she shouted, grinning from ear to ear.
All sound on the deck below stopped. River peeked over the edge and saw a Mal-shaped blob, covered in soggy paper, glaring up at her.
“It’s sleet!” she called gleefully. “Just like home!”
Mal slowly dragged the clumps of paper off his face. The rest of the crew had apparently been out of range of the soggy projectile, and they all waited for some kind of explosion from Mal.
All except Jayne. He began chuckling and snorting quietly, cheeks red with the effort of keeping it in. Mal turned the laser-eyes on him, but when Zoë began to snicker as well, the floodgates opened. Even Mal decided it was funny, though he did go wash before continuing the celebrations.
Serenity wasn’t exactly like her first home, but River was satisfied with the family she’d found there.
