Ollie didn’t understand what was going on. For much of December his husband had been distant, but in the week leading up to Christmas they’d barely gotten to speak to each other at all. Christian was always on the phone or out somewhere, and when they were together he was distracted. Last night, Christmas Eve, he’d seemed downright depressed. When Ollie asked what was the matter, Christian just deflected. They’d gone to bed in silence, Ollie’s worried, Christian’s blank and impenetrable.
On Christmas morning, Ollie got up early to sneak his last few presents under the tree and begin breakfast. They were expecting several friends over in the afternoon, but the morning was just for the happy couple. He made all of Christian’s favorites for breakfast and waited for him to emerge.
When Christian came out and found the entire spread waiting, he looked crushed. Ollie could stand it no longer. “What’s wrong?” he demanding, no longer willing to accept deflections.
“I… I couldn’t find you a Christmas present,” Christian admitted, not meeting Ollie’s eyes. “I searched everywhere, but nothing seemed right. I asked Rebecca for help, and your aunt, I even asked Gregor if he knew of any pilots who would could take us up, since I remembered how much you loved our hot air balloon ride.” He looked up at his husband, blue eyes watery. “I’m so sorry, Ollie.”
Ollie couldn’t stand to see his husband so sad. He pulled Christian to him and held him tightly. “I don’t care about the presents. What matters is that you love me enough to try so hard to give me a happy Christmas.”
“I really did,” Christian said sincerely.
“Then that’s good enough for me.” He gave Christian a peck on the lips. “All I want for Christmas is you.”
