“Why is there a Christmas tree in the office?” Mary demanded upon seeing the shining monstrosity. “Not only is it imposing disgusting holiday spirit on me when my ears are already ringing from the annoying radio jingles that have been on since Halloween, it’s not even green. For God’s sake, who would make a Christmas tree silver?”
“They feared that if it was red, you would charge it,” Marshall commented mildly. Mary sneered at him.
“It’s festive,” her partner shrugged, giving the foot-high plastic tree a fond smile. “I like it.”
“Of course you do, it’s exactly the sort of mushy-” she broke off as her cell phone rang. “Saved by the bell,” she retorted to Marshall’s grin.
“The Ghosts of Christmas are on my side,” he whispered teasingly.
“Yeah, Jinx… You did what?… With whose money?… Well it’s my house!”
When Mary could only blink in astonishment, Marshall gave her a sympathetic look. “What’s up?”
“She decorated.”
Marshall hissed in sympathy.
“I’ve decided,” Mary nodded firmly. “I’ll live here until the New Year. Just me and that stupid silver tree, without any tinsel or over-sugary cookies or lame Christmas song covers.”
“Ho ho ho,” Marshall said sarcastically.
“Bah humbug.”
