I would just like to state, for the record, how sick I am of hearing about people who can't keep their rabbits indoors because their parents won't let them ( Read more... )

Another amen over here. My other pet peeve is when kids say their parents won't let them take the animal to the vet (or take them, or pay for it, etc.) For starters, what the hell did they think they were buying the kid, a flashlight? It doesn't work anymore, throw it away, we'll get a new one.

I think the problem on the part of the parents is that they come from a generation that doesn't see a bunny as an inside pet. Luckily, as most people our age are becoming somewhat more enlightened, it will be a common occurrence for people to know at least one person who had an inside bunny.

As for the kids, esp. when they are old enough to know better, when they ask for the damn pet, you'd think they would explain to their parents how it would need to be cared for.

Yes! Absolutely! Thank you!

I don't care whether or not the kid in question explained to their parent how much vet care a rabbit could need... if you're a parent, it's your responsibility to research a pet before you allow your kid to bring it home... And after your kid brings this creature to live with you, you're responsible for making sure that it's adequately cleaned/watered/fed/vetted. Welcome to adulthood, parenthood, & especially pet-ownership by proxy! ;P

And if you're a kid old enough to bring an animal into your parents' home w/o consulting them, then you should be old/responsible enough to adequately care for said animal, & bring it to the vet when needed.

I agree, although I have to admit that my cat lived the first 10 years of her life outdoors because my mother did grow up with farm people and cats were okay outside. It took years for the Rules Regarding Pets Indoors to erode to the point where the cat was sleeping inside at night. (And yet the cat and dog both had regular vet visits and dental hygeine and the dog had all his food and environmental allergies attended to, so the relative location of said pets isn't always totally indicative of how well its being cared for although it is often suggestive. ...Of course, the dog got to sleep inside from day one, and he would've been left in the house while we were gone except he was so anxious that he'd just pee everywhere. Double standard!)
