Witches do indeed have trouble with running water, as do fairies (see: Tam O'Shanter). They also use it in their spells. Water is an important component in the world of myth and magic. Water is in a very strange state-- it's there, but you can put your hand into it, it reflects what's without as well as being able to see down into what is within, you need it to live but it can kill you-- it's full of mysterious contradictions and is considered a window to worlds beyond. Part of the Scottish preparations for a wake and funeral was to get any water out of the house, lest the departing spirit be trapped. In other areas, a bowl of water was prominently placed by the body, so the spirit could use it as a gate to the next world.
