I am very strongly opposed to capital punishment - sure I agree let's fry the Dahmers, Bundies etc. They're frightening and alien. Because there is McCain's bill that is likely to be passed that will have the gov send sites like Myspace the sex offender registry and will require them to terminate any matches and report them.
There are a number of states that have passed similar laws. So, identifying the sex offenders on Myspace isn't the point (that's already being done elsewhere). No, the real point of the gov here is to obtain MySpace's data on the non-sex offender population.

Under previous pressure they had cancelled the accounts of registered sex offenders they could identify.
Now, however, they are sending that data to the states - not just the active users, but closed accounts.
Note that there was nothing illegal about these people being on this site. Then, under pressure, Myspace kicked them off. And now, they're sending out these people's names to attorney generals of all the states.
