I am very strongly opposed to capital punishment - sure I agree let's fry the Dahmers, Bundies etc. They're frightening and alien. Part of why they are so scary is because they are so far out of the norm. When did it become sound judgment to base policies on the far corners of the bell curve? I'll post a longer response at a later time but I wanted to quickly say that this myspace issue isn't a case of privacy rights folks being paranoid. Let's take the "its for the children" stance at face value - it's still not needed.
Because there is McCain's bill that is likely to be passed that will have the gov send sites like Myspace the sex offender registry and will require them to terminate any matches and report them.
There are a number of states that have passed similar laws. So, identifying the sex offenders on Myspace isn't the point (that's already being done elsewhere). No, the real point of the gov here is to obtain MySpace's data on the non-sex offender population.

Myspace caved today.
Under previous pressure they had cancelled the accounts of registered sex offenders they could identify.
Now, however, they are sending that data to the states - not just the active users, but closed accounts.
Note that there was nothing illegal about these people being on this site. Then, under pressure, Myspace kicked them off. And now, they're sending out these people's names to attorney generals of all the states.
