RARE D.C. CELEBRITY SIGHTING

Nov 15, 2006 14:25

At about 10 last night, Lisa (my roommate) got a call from a friend saying that a female Hollywood celebrity was having drinks three blocks away at the Duplex Diner, and that we should grab our sneakers and head over immediately.

Now I’m no pop culture junkie of any kind -- I watch maybe an hour of TV a week, and am lucky to catch a handful of movies a year. But seeing the excitement on Lisa’s face as she thrust on her jacket and hurried me out of the shower, I couldn’t help but wonder what this blonde bombshell looked like in person, and appreciate the burgeoning fact that this probably wouldn’t be my ordinary Tuesday evening.

We strolled into the surprisingly empty bar, and in the corner, surrounded by a fawning horde of gay men, was Renee Zellweger. She looked absolutely strapping in black, just as lovely in person as in Chicago. A bit more unfortunately, she has one of the more obnoxious laughs I’ve heard -- booming, drawn-out, and totally distracting from anything else happening in the vicinity (not to mention totally consistent with the self-absorbed celebrity stereotype).

But even though I like her work -- her turns in Cold Mountain and Cinderella Man were particularly heart-warming - this is all the vicarious impression I actively gleaned before becoming content and heading in for the night. Even so, this is far more glamorous than most celebrity sightings in my everyday life - e.g. Dick Cheney’s motorcade impeding my walk home, Willard Scott in the Watergate CVS, George Stephanopolous walking his dog. I assume Renee must be shooting some new movie in Washington?
