this entry dedicated to the memory of William Barnhill

An old lady who was in front of me at the grocery store just apologized to me (for taking a long time arguing over the price of halloween candy) by saying to me, "sorry, young lady". I'm not sure if she missed the two days of stubble, or just assumed that 'long hair in ponytail' meant 'female', but that certainly helped her fulfill all the the Old ( Read more... )

I only think that the whole old-person stereotype is an issue if you are trying to be part of the not-old-person stereotype before hand. I think its that whole "Hey, where did 'normal' go?" look that creates the old-person culture shock and associated young person mock.
I've known quite a few elderly men and women who so clearly didn't care that they were out of it. They didn't look down on the "new" culture because they didn't miss the old. These were some of the coolest people I knew. (Take that recent news story of the grandmother who broke her arm while tackling an alligator. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6230852/
I'm sorry, she rocks and I don't care if the ATM gives her trouble)

Omg, YES! We shall be viewed as a quaint and primitive society ruled over by long-forgotten gods. Hell, some of us think that now! Heh. Me, of course... but also Nietzche ( ... )

Spalding Gray is the shizzle.. Got both of his spoken word movies.. "Swimming to Cambodia" and "Monster in a Box" .. definately recommend them if you like good monologues.

Haven't looked at his books yet though.. can you recommend one?

I was a fan of his since high school... a shame he killed himself. =P

I've seen both of those, and he also has a third monologue movie: "Gray's Anatomy", about his search for treatment for his eye condition.

Books: I only have "Sex and Death to the Age 14", a written collection of six or so of his old monologues. He's also got a novel, "Impossible Vacation", that I've been meaning to pick up for years but never got around to.
