There is no way I could, in a single effort, list the most brilliant or important musical works of all time so this is but one installment of suggested listening and/or supplemental music history

Haven't listened to any of that for the most part, but I'll get right on it. I've been listening to a lot of Maxim Vengerov lately though, what do you think of him?
Maxim's techincal facility is astounding. His tone is a bit bright for my tastes but it is palatable in light of his abilities.
His relationship with Rostropovich has been a blessing and a curse. The sound quality of the recordings they've made is unreal. Seriously, an orchestra doesn't sound like that in a hall. Rostropovich has this problem with tempi though and it's painfully apparent at times.
Maxim is a strange man. When I met him, it wasn't too eventful but when my friend Sarah met him...now THAT'S a story :)
"The premise is that of minimizing consequences when the relationship goes south."
This begs the question though, why did you post this comment on the "most brilliant or important musical works of all time" post as opposed to the "list" post? :)

There are moments of brilliance amongst his other works but the ninth symphony is just so far beyond everything else he did, it's astounding.
